My City My Place
Port Blair – A City of Calm Seas, Rich Stories and Island Charm
Port Blair, the lively capital of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, is a place where nature, history and culture blend beautifully. Surrounded by turquoise waters, gentle beaches and lush green forests, the city has a unique charm that instantly captures the heart of every visitor. Though modern in many ways, Port Blair still carries the warmth of island life, where people live with simplicity, harmony and a deep connection to nature.
The culture of Port Blair is a reflection of the many communities who live here. People from different parts of India have settled in the islands over the years, giving the city a mixed cultural flavour. This diversity can be seen in the festivals, languages, clothing and food. Islanders are known for their friendly nature and hospitality, making visitors feel at home from the moment they arrive. Life here moves at a peaceful pace, guided by the rhythm of the sea, colourful markets, traditional music and the smiling faces of the locals.
The city also has a strong historical background. One of its most important landmarks is the Cellular Jail, a silent reminder of India’s freedom struggle. Built in the late 19th century, the structure once held freedom fighters who fought bravely for the nation. Today, it stands as a national memorial, where the evening light-and-sound show brings stories of courage and sacrifice to life. Walking through its long corridors gives a deep sense of respect for the heroes of the past.
Beyond its history, Port Blair is surrounded by breath-taking natural beauty. Just a short boat ride away are some of the most stunning islands in the region. Havelock Island, now officially known as Swaraj Dweep, is famous for its white sand beaches, tall coconut trees and crystal-clear waters. Radhanagar Beach, often called one of Asia’s best beaches, is the perfect place to watch a golden sunset. Neil Island, known as Shaheed Dweep, offers a quieter experience with natural rock formations, coral reefs and peaceful beaches like Laxmanpur and Bharatpur.
Closer to the city, places like Ross Island (Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Island) offer a glimpse of old colonial structures wrapped in thick roots and greenery, creating a scene that feels almost magical. North Bay Island, with its colourful coral life, is popular for snorkelling and underwater activities. For nature lovers, Chidiya Tapu provides the most serene sunset views along with rich birdlife. The Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park in Wandoor showcases the marine world through glass-bottom boat rides and calm lagoons.
Food in Port Blair is another delightful experience. Being an island city, seafood is a favourite here. Fresh fish, prawns, crabs and lobsters are cooked in simple yet flavourful styles. Apart from this, the local markets also offer a variety of Indian dishes due to the mixed communities living in the city. South Indian, North Indian and Bengali flavours are commonly found, making the food scene both diverse and comforting. Coconut, banana leaves and fresh spices often add a tropical touch to many dishes. For those who enjoy sweets, small bakeries across the city serve delicious cakes, buns and local snacks perfect for tea time.
What makes Port Blair truly special is its balance of history, nature and culture. It is a city where every corner tells a story whether it is the calm sea by Marina Park, the sound of waves at Corbyn’s Cove, the echoes of history inside the Cellular Jail or the vibrant colours of life in the local markets. The beauty of Port Blair lies not only in its landscapes but also in its peaceful atmosphere and the warmth of its people.
Under the “My City My Place” column, Port Blair stands as a reminder of how a city can be both simple and extraordinary at the same time. It invites everyone to slow down, breathe in the fresh island air and enjoy the gentle beauty that surrounds it. Anyone who visits this charming city leaves with memories of blue oceans, green forests, rich culture and the timeless magic of island life.
